Marathi-Hindi-English Call Transcription: What Maharashtra Sales Teams Need

SalesEar Team7 min read

A real estate agent in Thane is discussing a 2BHK with a prospect from Dombivli. The conversation goes: "Sir, flat cha carpet area 850 square feet aahe, registration charges vegla lagtil, stamp duty sadhya 6 percent aahe Maharashtra madhe, and possession 2028 madhe milel."

Marathi sentence structure. English real estate terms. A specific percentage. A state-level regulation reference. One sentence. Three languages.

A standard transcription tool picks Marathi or Hindi at the start and forces everything into that language. "Carpet area" becomes a phonetic guess in Devanagari. "850 square feet" might come through as a number, but "square feet" gets garbled. "Stamp duty" disappears or gets merged with the surrounding Marathi. "6 percent" might survive, but the context linking it to Maharashtra stamp duty is lost.

The transcript looks like it captured the call. But when a manager tries to use it for coaching or compliance review, the key details are missing or wrong.

How Maharashtra Sales Calls Actually Sound

Marathi-Hindi-English code-switching in Maharashtra has a distinct pattern. Marathi is the relationship and conversational frame. Hindi serves as a bridge, especially when the prospect is originally from UP, Bihar, or Rajasthan but settled in Mumbai or Pune. English carries the technical, financial, and legal vocabulary.

This three-way pattern shows up differently across verticals.

Real estate in Mumbai and MMR. Developers like Rustomjee, Godrej, Lodha, and Runwal have sales teams pitching across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A prospect in Kalyan hears a pitch in Marathi with Hindi pricing discussions and English terms for carpet area, built-up area, RERA registration, OC, CC, and GST component. A single pricing discussion might sound like: "Sir, basic price 1.2 crore aahe, tyat GST 5 percent extra lagel, and parking 5 lakh cha aahe, included nahi aahe." Marathi verbs, English financial terms, Hindi-style number formatting.

Insurance in Pune and Nashik. Motor and health insurance renewals in Maharashtra use Marathi for the relationship, Hindi for negotiation, and English for policy terminology. "Tumcha premium yanda 18,500 aahe, magchya varshi pasun 2,200 ne vadhla aahe, but coverage same rahil, 50 lakh cha." NCB, IDV, co-pay, sub-limit, waiting period all appear in English inside Marathi sentences.

Loan DSA networks across Maharashtra. Agents in Nashik, Aurangabad, and Nagpur pitch home loans and personal loans. Processing fee, CIBIL score, EMI calculation, and disbursement timeline are English terms. The pitch frame is Marathi or Hindi depending on the prospect's background. "Tumchi eligibility baghat, CIBIL score 720 aahe, 30 lakh paryant loan approve hoil, processing fee 1 percent lagel."

Automotive dealers in Pune and Mumbai. Exchange value, on-road price, ex-showroom, variant details. All English terms inside Marathi conversation. "Gadi chi on-road price 14.2 lakh aahe, exchange madhe tumchya Swift la approximately 4 lakh milel."

Where Generic Transcription Breaks

The failure points for Marathi-Hindi-English are similar to other Indian language combinations but with one additional complexity: Marathi and Hindi share the Devanagari script and many vocabulary items. A transcription model that handles Hindi well will often "hear" Hindi when the speaker is actually speaking Marathi, because the phonetic overlap is significant.

This creates errors that are harder to spot. The transcript looks readable (it is in a language the manager understands) but specific Marathi words are replaced with Hindi equivalents that have slightly different meanings. "Aahe" (Marathi) might get transcribed as "hai" (Hindi). The sentence reads fine, but the speaker's actual language choice is lost, which matters for coaching if the manager is tracking whether agents are speaking in the prospect's preferred language.

Three specific failure patterns:

Number-term associations. "Stamp duty 6 percent aahe Maharashtra madhe" contains a percentage, a state name, and a legal term inside a Marathi sentence. A Hindi model captures the sentence structure but might miss "Maharashtra madhe" or transcribe it incorrectly because the model does not expect a state-level legal reference in that position. A Marathi model might capture the text but miss "stamp duty" as an English compound term.

Compound English terms. "Carpet area," "built-up area," "floor rise charge," "no-objection certificate," "occupancy certificate." These are multi-word English terms that appear inside Marathi sentences. A model that handles single English words within Marathi (like "loan" or "EMI") might still fail on compound terms because it treats each word separately and breaks the phrase.

Numbers in mixed format. Maharashtra sales calls use both Indian numbering (lakhs, crores) and metric/English formats (square feet, percent) in the same sentence. "1.2 crore" and "850 square feet" follow different conventions. An accurate transcript preserves both in their original format without normalizing or converting.

Why Accuracy Matters for Maharashtra Markets

Maharashtra has some of the highest-value real estate in India. A transcription error on a Mumbai property call has a higher rupee impact than the same error in most other markets.

An agent who says "basic price 1.2 crore aahe" and the transcript records "1.2 lakh" or "12 crore" creates a pricing flag that is either a false alarm or a missed real error. A compliance reviewer who sees "parking included aahe" in the transcript flags it. But if the agent actually said "parking included nahi aahe" and the "nahi" was dropped by the transcription model, the flag is wrong and the actual compliance issue is invisible.

For insurance teams in Maharashtra handling health policies, the terms that matter are precise: sub-limit amounts, room rent caps, co-pay percentages, waiting periods. A transcript that garbles these makes the compliance review unreliable. The reviewer cannot tell whether the agent quoted the correct terms or whether the transcript is just inaccurate.

RERA compliance for Maharashtra developers adds another layer. RERA-registered carpet areas, possession dates, and project registration numbers are mentioned on sales calls. If these are transcribed incorrectly, the audit trail is broken. The developer has call recordings but the transcripts derived from them are not trustworthy for compliance purposes.

What Accurate Marathi Transcription Requires

Getting Marathi-Hindi-English right requires the same approach as other Indian language combinations: a model trained on multilingual Indian audio with code-switching at the sentence level.

Three capabilities differentiate a trained model:

The model recognizes Marathi as distinct from Hindi despite the phonetic overlap. It does not default to Hindi when it hears Devanagari-script languages. Marathi-specific vocabulary, verb forms, and sentence endings ("aahe," "nahi," "madhe," "la") are in the training data.

The model handles compound English terms inside Marathi syntax. "Carpet area" is transcribed as a single English phrase, not broken into two separate words that get absorbed into the surrounding Marathi text.

The model preserves numbers in their spoken format. "1.2 crore" stays as "1.2 crore." "850 square feet" stays as "850 square feet." No normalization, no format conversion, no digit-to-word or word-to-digit changes.

SalesEar's deep transcription mode handles Marathi-Hindi-English code-switching at the sentence level. Financial terms, real estate vocabulary, insurance terminology, and Indian numbering conventions are part of the training data.
